Neuropathy Symptoms

Neuropathy Symptoms

According to the National Institutes of Health, over 20 million Americans suffer from neuropathy, also known as peripheral neuropathy. No matter what you call it, it means that one or more of your nerves have been damaged. At Heuser Chiropractic, we have been providing Colorado Springs residents with neuropathy treatment for many years.

Strange Sensations

The most common symptoms of neuropathy are feeling stabbing, burning, or throbbing pain in the arms and legs. You may feel as if something is touching your skin when nothing is. You also may feel tingling or numbness anywhere from your fingers to your toes. Being touched by anything may be very painful.

Loss of Strength

The nerves tell the rest of the body how to move. When they malfunction, it greatly affects your ability to get around. You may feel weakness in your arms and legs. You may find walking more difficult. You may even suddenly fall. Over time, muscle paralysis can set in.

More Unusual Symptoms

Since nerves control just about every part of the body, you may experience problems in other areas of the body rather than the arms and legs. These include low blood pressure, incontinence, sweating far more than usual, and heat intolerance.

Similar to Some Signs of Stroke

Numbness, tingling down one side of the body, and sudden weakness are also signs of a stroke. There usually are other symptoms, such as slurring your words, part of the face being paralyzed, and more confusion than usual. Call a doctor if you are experiencing any of these symptoms for the first time.

Who is Most at Risk for Neuropathy?

Diabetics are at high risk of developing neuropathy. Other people prone to getting it are those that suffered serious injuries, have been exposed to poison, had severe infections, or have problems with their metabolism. Neuropathy also runs in families. If your parents had it, you are more likely to get it.
